Chery's Spanish factory will be among its main export facilities worldwide.
Chinese automobile brand Chery, which entered the Turkish market after many years, later announced that it would establish a factory in Spain.
Chery announced that the newly acquired Barcelona factory will be one of their main export facilities worldwide and that they aim to produce 150 thousand vehicles per year.
Production at the facility, Chery's first factory in Europe, will start at the end of summer and automakers will initially hire 150 former Nissan workers.
Chery Deputy General Manager Guibing Zhang said during a presentation: "Once we reach sufficient production, we will plan to export to the rest of Europe and other countries, making this one of Chery's main export facilities worldwide."
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that Chery and Spanish EV Motors will invest approximately 400 million euros in the facility.
This year, Chery will produce the Omoda 5 SUV in Barcelona, with both fully electric and internal combustion engine versions, and will later start production of the Jaecoo 7.
EV Motors will relaunch Spanish brand EBRO, which ceased sales in 1987, using a common production platform and technology with Chery.
EV Motors will begin production of two SUV models in plug-in hybrid and combustion versions in the fourth quarter.
